Deliverance - to be rescued or set free

Deliverance

Deliverance means being rescued or set free by the power of His Holy Spirit. Hence, Jesus Christ is the source of deliverance, redemption, and salvation.

“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”, Matthew 6:13.

Furthermore, deliverance has two spiritual meanings. The first one is to rescue or set free, and the second is to cast out evil spirits. In today’s article, we will examine both.

Salvation, deliverance, and redemption

Deliverance in Greek is translated as apeleftherosi = απελευθέρωση, meaning liberation.

Furthermore, the terms redemption and salvation are synonymous with deliverance.

Salvation is defined as the protection or deliverance from danger, calamity, or loss. Theology refers to freedom from sin and its consequences.

Moreover, redemption refers to the process of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil. Thus, Jesus Christ is known as The Redeemer, Deliverer, and Saviour; only He has the power to redeem, deliver, and save souls.

Deliverance from sins

In John 8:31-32, it’s written.
“You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

Our minds are held hostage in a whirlwind of worldly matters that have subdued our hearts and souls. These worldly matters have taken over our lives, thoughts, and intentions. As a result, we struggle to maintain a balance between our Christian duties and our everyday lives.

Thus, we battle soul corruption, desires, temptations, and passions daily, which ultimately fills us with fear and doubt.

As a result, people are confused, anxious, and entangled in this web of lies and confusion spun by the devil himself.

One of these lies that satan binds us with is doubt; doubting Jesus’ birth, crucifixion, and resurrection, and, most crucially, doubting God’s Holy Trinity.

As a consequence, fear is formed in our hearts that keeps us from seeking God’s mercy, forgiveness, refuge, and help, and, most significantly, from comprehending the actual depth of His love. Therefore, the act of deliverance frees us from these satanic bonds.

Possession and Deliverance

Because deliverance deals with an evil power that holds one hostage, the process of releasing a soul from this evil is known as exorcism or deliverance.

Evil spirits can inhabit anyone, no matter their age. Possession is intended to end human life and eventually take possession of the soul.

When an evil spirit possesses a human spirit, it imprisons it in the underworld. In turn, the evil spirit takes over the possessed body.

As a result, a deliverance or exorcism is done to free the human spirit from the underworld and return it to its body, while the evil spirit is expelled from the body and returned to the underworld.

Jeremiah 15:21 “I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless.”

Therefore, exorcisms can only be performed with the power of the Holy Spirit bestowed by God upon an ordained Christian priest.

In conclusion,

The power of Jesus Christ grants deliverance, redemption, and salvation, all of which signify the same thing: to be saved and set free.

Thus, deliverance occurs through Baptism, Holy Communion, repentance, prayer, and confession, among other things, which are means by which Jesus Christ’s Holy Spirit liberates us from sin and evil.

“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalm 18:2

In Jesus Christ we trust,

Amen
