The Holy Communion - Eucharist

The Holy Communion

The Holy Communion or Eucharist is a sacred mystery instituted by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper.

Bread and wine are consecrated on an altar with the blessing of Christ through His Holy Spirit, and the transubstantiation takes place.

Transubstantiation or metousiosis is the change of the whole substance of bread into the substance of The Body of Christ, and the whole substance of wine into the substance of The Blood of Christ.

Thereafter, the consecrated elements are consumed by Christians.

Benefits of The Eucharist.

Holy Communion is the eternal pledge of God’s Infinite Love. When devoutly received, the Holy Communion has the following benefits:

A. The infusion of grace and the corresponding increase in merit.
B. The remission of venial sins and preservation from future mortal sin.
C. The restoration of a deeper abiding union between Christ and our souls prepares us for an everlasting union with Him.

In addition, each time we receive Communion, we remind ourselves of the covenant we have with God. This covenant was ratified by the Blood of Jesus Christ when He was crucified on the cross for our sins.

Everlasting benefits continued…

Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper as a memorial of His atoning sacrifice on the cross. When we receive the Holy Communion, we commemorate the death of Christ. Therefore, we acknowledge Jesus redeeming us from the eternal consequences of sin.

In addition, the extreme blood loss Jesus endured on the cross from the inhumane physical abuse He endured has healed our generational iniquities.

The Eucharist shields and protects our souls against all evil, and Jesus’ crucifixion signalled the following:

⦁ When Jesus died on the cross, He freed the world from the dominion of sin and satan’s power.
⦁ Jesus, blood is one of our weapons against satan.

Therefore, the Holy Communion cancels every plot satan devises against us.

How to prepare yourself for the Eucharist.

It’s essential to align our souls with God’s Holy Spirit before receiving the Holy Communion. Our body and soul are purified through prayer, fasting, devotion, and works.

Fasting lasts for seven days and is the abstention from eating and drinking animal products. During these seven days, people can eat everything except animal products such as meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy.

Prayer strengthens the physical body, invigorates the mind, and illuminates the soul. When fasting and prayer are combined, they become a powerful weapon against temptations by deflecting all evil influences.

On the other hand, prayer and fasting are useless without works.

Christians should abide by God’s Ten Commandments, love their fellow human beings, practice charity and forgiveness, respect all God’s animals, and abstain from harmful substances such as alcohol and smoking.

Therefore, when abstention is practised faithfully, our minds, bodies, and souls become purified and ready to receive God’s Holy Spirit.

In conclusion,

The Holy Communion, in simple terms, is the sacred mystery in which bread and wine turn into the flesh and blood of Jesus.

His flesh and blood are the ultimate weapon against evil, temptation, sin, illnesses, and spiritual death. Preparing our bodies for the consumption of the Eucharist denotes respect, humility, and acknowledgment of Christ’s sacrifice for our sins.

Christians should receive the Holy Communion at least once a month. This way, our souls and spirits become shielded against temptations and evil. In addition, our venial sins are eliminated, and our souls are not deprived of Divine Grace.

Therefore, the Holy Communion is a gift from God, Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen
